Are you looking for a way to stay nutritionally balanced on your Whole Food Plant Based diet?
Look no further! Dr. Michael Greger has done all the work for you to determine exactly how many servings of each category you need for optimal health! My support group and I use this app daily. It is so easy and free! That is why I recommend Dr. Greger’s Daily Dozen App as my #1 tool that you will need to be successful with your new WFPB way of life.
Once you download the app you will have access to so many amazing videos, serving size facts, a breakdown of what foods are available in each category and a checklist to help you keep track of what you have consumed for the day.
As you can see in the picture above from nutritionfacts.org the categories are beans, berries, other fruits, cruciferous vegetables, greens, other vegetables, flaxseeds, nuts, spices, whole grains, beverages, exercise, and vitamins. The main idea is that each category offers different levels of nutrition than the other. For instance, cruciferous veggies including broccoli, cauliflower, kale (and the list goes on) contain a component called sulforaphane which is thought to prevent DNA damage, the spread of certain cancers, defend against pathogens & pollutants, prevent lymphoma, protect your brain, help to manage Type 2 Diabetes, help to treat Autism and so much more! The thing that is so interesting, is that sulforaphane is ONLY found in cruciferous vegetables. So we should have at least one serving of cruciferous veggies a day. If we skip out on this category then we miss out on all the wonderful things these vegetables have to offer. That is how Dr, Greger uses this app to help keep us balanced. He has done all the research to know exactly how many servings of each food we need a day.
Make it fun!
Dr. Greger has a Daily Dozen challenge that you can do with friends or a support group, etc. Our support group did a challenge we called A Dozen Days of the Daily Dozen. Each day we all tried as hard as we could to hit all the check marks. I sent out pictures to the group each morning to encourage them, and we all supported each other to do our best. Everyone that participated felt better, had more energy and some even lost weight. Here are the pictures I made for our group. Feel free to download or copy them and use them for your own personal challenge, but please point the credit for the pictures back to this site so more people can hear about getting started on a Whole Food Plant Based diet.
To learn more about the Daily Dozen challenge check out Dr. Greger’s You Tube video here. I suggest you also read Dr. Greger’s book How Not To Die and his cookbook the How Not To Die cookbook. Both of these are listed in the Resources section of this website.
