I love Nutritional Yeast!  I sprinkle it on whatever I can…

Nutritional Yeast is primarily used as cheese replacement for those eating dairy free. Many people either haven’t heard of it, or know about it but are afraid to try it in fear that it may taste bad, or be too dry. To me it has a nutty smell and a savory cheesy taste.

So first, let me introduce you to this powerhouse of a food.  Nutritional Yeast can be found in your health food stores normally in bulk as well as packaged.  Bulk is always a better deal financially as long as it’s fresh.  I also have found it in the healthy living section of our local grocery store.

It is not an active yeast like brewers or bakers yeast.  It is normally grown on sugar cane or molasses. You get a significant dose of vitamins and minerals when you eat nutritional yeast, and one serving provides about 4 grams of fiber. It’s a complete protein which means of the 18 amino acids it contains, 9 are the essential ones that your body can’t make.  It is chock full of tons of good vitamins, nutrients and immunity enhancing compounds such as:

  • Glucan Beta 1, 3: (Used to boost the immune system in people whose body defenses have been weakened by Auto Immune conditions, chemo therapy and more).
  • Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)
  • Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
  • Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
  • Vitamin B3 (Niacin)
  • Vitamin B12 (in fortified versions – Cobalamin)
  • Vitamin B9 (Folate)
  • Zinc
  • and more…

Since it has so many Vitamin B components, you should sprinkle it on meals throughout the day.  According to the Office of Dietary Supplements, our bodies can’t absorb very much Vitamin B at one time.  You body will take what it needs and send the rest to your liver and kidneys to be filtered out through your urine.  If you eat small amounts throughout the day, chances of actually absorbing and using the B vitamins are higher.  So it’s a win, win! Yummy and healthy!

So, without further ado, there are many ways to use Nutritional Yeast.

1. You can toss it on tacos

2. Sprinkle it on Sub Sandwiches

3. Use it on veggie pizzas in place of cheese

4. Mix it into your homemade veggie burgers

5. Make the most amazing Hemp Seed Muffins

6. Avocado Toast with grilled onions and spinach

This is only 6 examples of how to use the powerhouse Nutritional Yeast.  I try to sprinkle it on everything I can getting those extra vitamins on.  I am sure there are 100’s of ways to use it.
